Playing in Summerside
Steeped in history, rich in culture, Summerside loves to celebrate its heritage. Throughout the year there are many family oriented festivals to enjoy. Most of these occur in the city’s downtown core where there are many specialty shops, restaurants and attractions just a few steps away from the boardwalk along the water’s edge.
Being a youthful and vibrant city, no matter the season, there is always a good reason to be out and about in Summerside. The community abounds in hiking and biking trials. It’s a main destination for avid cyclists and boating enthusiasts and there are ample organized sports for those who wish to get involved. If sitting in the stands is more your style, Summerside hosts a number of top professional sporting events. It has been home to the Karcher Canadian Junior Curling Championships, Atlantic Canadian Strongman’s Competition, the Canadian Junior Hockey Championships, and Softball Canada to name just a few.
When looking for activities that require a little less energy, a walking tour or an event held at The Wyatt Heritage Properties may be just the thing. The Eptek Centre for the Arts provides an excellent gallery and community showcase and The Harbourfront Theatre offers numerous live performances throughout the year.
With young families in mind, The City of Summerside has developed many excellent recreational facilities. It’s most recent development is Credit Union Place with its conference rooms, ice arenas with seating for over 3,500, bowling lanes, fitness centre, squash courts, six-lane competitive pool, saunas and hot tubs and a restaurant. The well established Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club has six sheets of curling ice, a marina with facilities for 109 vessels, and a banquet hall for up to 1,500 guests. At Slemon Park you can enjoy a full gym, tennis and squash courts, softball and baseball, soccer, and a 200 seat lecture theatre. Queen Elizabeth Park provides three lit baseball fields, full service concessions, seating for 10,000, outdoor tennis and basketball courts, and an outdoor track.
Having a modern outlook and preparing for the influx of people who want to live in a safer, more family oriented environment, Summerside has established itself as a desireable, affordable, far-sighted city of dreams.
